After graduation, the time started when you start to look or jobs and there are chances that someone has already advised you to include your career objective at the very start of your resume and there is also a chance that you continued this practice by listening to the advice of that person whenever the time new job search begins.
But the unfortunate thing here is the objective statement at the top of the resume is an old-fashioned thing that is long forgotten now and it is not wrong to say that “objective” has become a dirty word now among the community of resume-writing.
We have seen many resumes with the same generic objective lines that mostly talk about hard-working, motivated, looking to new opportunities etc. and these types of statements can easily make most resume writers cringe for about few reasons.
Reasons to replace your career objective statement
A generic sentence like this will not be going to show the reader for what position you are applying and why you are qualified for this job position.
There’s a lot of fluff
Self-starter, motivated, and a hard worker and these types of other terms are used as a filler word by hiring managers or recruiters. Don’t just mention the word hard working but instead you can explain in your professional resume that you have achieved in your career so far or if it is the start of your career you can also mention what you have achieved in your academic career as well. avoid mentioning these kinds of generic lines in your resume.
It uses pronouns
There is still a debate in the resume writing world that most of the professional writers believe that the resume writers should not mention pronouns such as Me or I. but it is fine to add this in your LinkedIn profile. Below you can see the sample summary
“Strategic business-development professional with more than 10 years’ experience leading B2B sales teams to increase the share of the market, generate revenues, and quotas for organization within SAAS sector. Possess experience and in-depth knowledge to generate lead and different techniques…”
It’s all about you
The statements of resume objective will talk about your job type and what it needs to focus and what you can offer to the hiring manager. Keep this thing in mind that you are writing your resume for the hiring manager and recruiters to read so instead of listing your wants and needs you should mention what you can deliver in that job position.
The length of resume objective should be ranging from 3 to 5 sentences approximately and to what to include in this section you should ask some questions to yourself.
- What are the reasons that you qualify for this job?
- What about education, experience, and skills are they enough to be a good candidate for this kind of job?
- How I should use my qualification to create effective results and provide to the previous employers?
It is necessary that your resume should include your experience, achievement, industry, and career goals. This summary will help you to set the tone and will focus on the rest of your resume.
What to add to your professional summary?
There are additional pieces that you can also look for more information to include in your resume and clarify your value and intent.
If there is more than one language that you speak than making sure that you have incorporated this information in your summary as well. for example, you can add Bilingual: English and Spanish or Multilingual: English, Arabic, Russian depending upon languages that you know.
There are some that require you to travel and this requirement is usually linked with some specific type of jobs such as in sales, business development or other types of consulting jobs. If you are comfortable with travel requirements then you must enter a short sentence that will specify this information as well.
If you are interested to relocate your work than you can also incorporate this in your professional resume and there is any specific location where you want to locate than you can also mention like this “Interested in relocating to the greater Chicago, ABC area.” Or you can mention Willing to relocate. This will clearly show the hiring manager or employer that how dedicated you are towards the job.
For the international applicants, recruiters may assume that you require sponsorship to work for their organization and in that case, you may be screened out automatically by employers if they don’t want to bear the additional cost that is related to the hiring process. If you don’t need sponsorship to work in the US then you should mention that your resume clearly like this “Green card holder – no sponsorship required,” or “U.S. Citizen: No sponsorship required”.
Yes, it is now time for you ditch your statement that you write in your objective statement and writing the professional is not as tough as some people think you just need to spend some of your quality time in writing these important and effective statements for a professional summary of your resume.
